Just recently, I learned my Great Grandmother got kicked out of Korea when my Great Grandfather was a Colonel in the Korean War.
For what?
For being an outspoken woman with strong opinions about the world around her.
And she’s not the only woman in my lineage to get kicked out of places (or beheaded) for being unruly.
Unruly.
Cannot be ruled.
Unmanageable.
This explains a lot.
It’s genetic.
But lately, I’ve caught myself caving in to some back stepping erasure of women in our culture.
Especially as I age. But also, lately, at any age.
Women are told to “age gracefully”.
And that seems so boring to me, so complacent.
I am.
Done.
With.
That.
I’m done with all of it.
I’m embracing my nature.
I’ll be as unruly and unmanageable as I want to be.
At any age.
Or, maybe demure if the occasion calls for it, but maybe not.
Because…
I’ll be aging restlessly and I decide what to do with my person, my thoughts, my life.
That’s a legacy I can leave for women who come after me.
So, PLEASE…Use your voice.
Keep using it.
Hand down unruliness as a birthright to your grand daughters and great granddaughters.
Set a stellar example.
Anchor it in the genes.
They’ll thank you for it!
Thanks, Gram Bett!
